High Tech vs. High Touch

As our world becomes increasingly more digital—and we are easier than ever to reach (and it’s even harder to disconnect)—how we communicate at work and with our colleagues has to evolve as well.

We’ve all sent that email that goes unanswered or let a voicemail message linger too long in our inbox. The more choices we have can often make it more difficult to choose. Throw in the detail of different generations preferring different communication methods, and who knows how to get a hold of anyone these days.

For example, is it ever OK to send a colleague a work-related message via Facebook? (Probably not.) What requires face-to-face dialogue and not the Google Hangout kind? (Definitely anything that can be construed as bad news.)

Blogger Ryan Jenkins put it this way:

“Never in history have we had more competing for our attention. Today more than ever we must be intentional about our offline engagements to ensure our ideas stick, our messages connect and our aspirations are understood.

In my studies, different generations have varying communication preferences. Younger generations prefer high-tech while older generations prefer high-touch (aka face-to-face communication). … Give yourself the best shot to succeed by harnessing both high-tech and high-touch communication.”
