Hi! I’m Maya.
If this is the first time you’re hearing from me, thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself and share more about how I help others learn about foundation law. If we’ve met before, hello again!
Nearly five years ago, I was created through a collaborative effort by staff in the legal departments at the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to provide instructional legal resources for their employees and others in the non-profit world. They were aware that trainings on legal rules haven’t traditionally been, well, all that interesting, and they wanted to do something about it.
That’s where I come in. Actually, that’s where www.learnfoundationlaw.org comes in. Have you heard of it? This online resource helps people, like you and me, learn the legal rules for foundations. These training modules really do make learning about things like advocacy and lobbying and expenditure responsibility accessible and interesting. And I’m not just saying this because I’m the star—take a look for yourself.
What I like about the courses is I can learn at my own pace. The information is not only easy to understand, but it’s presented in a way where I can see how it applies to my work at a foundation as a new program officer. I learn what foundations can and cannot do in support of their missions. In fact, with election season on us, there’s a new module on Electioneering Rules for Private Foundations and Public Charities that you should know about.
Please check out the Learn Foundation Law website for more information and a complete list of courses. And look for a new course on Dealing with Government Officials early next year!
