Networking: An Action Plan

(This post is part of our 2014 Resolve to Evolve program.)

Sometimes the hardest part of networking is just getting started.

Here are four ways to start building your network today:

1. Start with people you know. Former classmates, coworkers, and even relatives are a great place to start to build your network. (More information on getting started)

2. Link up with LinkedIn: Invite some of those new connections you made via the professional social network for coffee, lunch, or happy hour. Make that connection more than just virtual.

3. Attend a GMN Regional Chapter networking event. Check out the calendar for upcoming events in your region.

4. Tap into your mentor’s network. Ask him/her to introduce you to some people worth getting to know. (And don’t forget to send a thank-you note or email to your mentor once the introduction has been made.)

And don’t forget to follow up once you’ve made new connections. Exchange business cards and send a follow-up email.
