Inclusion or Illusion? A Look At Google’s $1 Billion Philanthropic Game Plan (Philip Rojc, Inside Philanthropy) When Google.org announced $50 million in workforce development grants this August, it called the effort its largest giving initiative to date, together with an earlier $50 million grant to close the global education gap.

NAACP Picks New CEO, Plans To Create (c)(4) Organization (Mark Hrywna, The Nonprofit Times) The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) elected Derrick Johnson as its next president and CEO, with a priority of creating a national 501(c)(4) social welfare organization to oversee local affiliates.

An Intentional Decision to Advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (Stacey Childress, New Schools) Grantmakers for Education (GFE) released a case study that chronicles our ongoing efforts at NewSchools to become a more diverse, equitable and inclusive investor and organization. I’ll be joining my colleagues Frances Messano and Deborah McGriff when the case study — which also features the work of the Lumina Foundation– is discussed by other funders who are interested in our journey. The case study details the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts both we and Lumina have undertaken in our grantmaking strategies and within our respective organizations.

Will We Finally Have Too Many Nonprofits? What’s Up at the IRS? (Jeannie Fox and Ruth McCambridge, Nonprofit Quarterly) Earlier this month, NPQ reported on the release of a new report from the Treasury Department’s inspector general for tax administration that clears up the myth that the Internal Revenue Service was only targeting politically conservative nonprofits applying for tax exempt status.
