Lessons from the Field: Pursuing more equitable and just philanthropic systems (PEAK Minnesota)

Joy Persall, M.A. will share her learning journey, seeds that were planted along the way, and what is being harvested in the current social environment. We will have an opportunity to ask questions, and reflect on our roles and opportunities to create and contribute to more equitable and just philanthropic systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify opportunities to expand more equitable philanthropy
  2. Participants will gain knowledge of resources to expand equitable philanthropy
  3. Understand the importance of cultural awareness to achieve equity in philanthropy
Speaker

Joy Persall, M.A.

Joy Persall is a coach, facilitator, and strategic organizational consultant focusing on transitions and transformational leadership. Joy brings a depth and breadth of experience in leading change toward equitable and inclusive systems in philanthropy, c3 and c4 nonprofits. She holds an M.A. in Organization Management and Development.

Joy has over 20 years of experience working as an organizer, funder, executive director, and organization development leader. Joy has been the Executive Director of Native Americans in Philanthropy, and Associate Director of The Headwaters Foundation for Justice, where she led capacity building programs and co-founded the Fund of the Sacred Circle. In 2010, she was awarded the Bush Foundation Leadership Fellowship where she focused on team process, coaching, and indigenous leadership.

Joy has acted widely as a board member, including Tiwahe Foundation, Take Action MN, MN Alliance for Progressive Action, The Funding Exchange, National Network of Grantmakers, National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, Charities Review Council, Minnesota Indians Women’s Resource Center, and Third Millennium Philanthropy & Leadership Initiative of The Center on Philanthropy (IUPUI).

As a woman of Ojibwe Metis’ descent, mother, grandmother, gardener, seed keeper, Joy is a gardener of people, teams, and organizations, developing their ability to grow, learn and create new solutions in a grounded atmosphere of human dignity and deep respect.
