Assessing Nonprofit Financial Health in Today’s Context

To the untrained eye, they may look like just rows and columns of numbers, but financial statements tell a story. That story is shaped by internal organizational factors, such as strategy, capacity, and values, and external factors, such as economic trends and social inequities. This session will help participants understand their grantees’ financial story—in the context of inflation, and in the face of historical inequities—with concepts applicable to a range of nonprofits. Focusing on effective approaches to interpreting financial statements, participants will learn the metrics and trends to pay attention to when conducting a review, and what they tell you about an organization’s opportunities and challenges. In addition to covering traditional 501c3 models, participants will gain skills in reviewing organizations with multi-entity models. This training session will provide an opportunity to put these skills to practice and apply them to your own work immediately.
