Progressive grantmakers should ensure their grantmaking is not contributing to or perpetuating the harmful practices that have systemically oppressed the historically marginalized communities they serve. In order for an organization to live by its values and build an equitable grantmaking practice, staff must understand their organization’s values, explore the organization’s commitment to those values, and ensure that staff involved in the grantmaking process are aligned on definitions of risk and the organization’s appetite for risk.
