Switching Hats: PRIs and Grantmaking Systems

Organization Members Only

Program-related investments (PRIs), also known as non-grant investments, hold great potential to finance projects too large for grants, to prove out new investment approaches for government or the private sector, and to help deliver capital at scale to targeted communities. Foundation systems are built for grants, but when foundations begin to use non-grant forms of capital to achieve program goals, they often look to grants management staff to manage the life cycle of PRIs as well. Grant managers face many difficulties as a result, especially if they are unaccustomed to using this tool.

Hear from two staff members from a leading PRI-making foundation about how Switching Hats became part of their everyday work life and some of the challenges they faced and solutions they engineered to leverage existing systems, adapt culture and support the program goals by successfully managing PRIs and integrating them into foundation systems. Session participants will hear Kresge’s story, gain practical advice and tools, and have an opportunity to ask questions.
