Using Participatory Grantmaking to Increase Equity in Grantmaking: A case study of The Share Fund

As funders work to share power and increase equity in their grantmaking, many are exploring the practice of participatory grantmaking (PGM). In this short talk, we share the experience we’ve had with one family client in establishing The Share Fund, a grantmaking body made up of five BIPOC community members in Washington state. Over the course of 2021, these individuals built trust amongst themselves, created their own ways of working, and succeeded in making grants totaling $500,000 in support of racial and gender justice in the state. We’ll share what we learned and what we’re doing differently in 2022.
